Reptiles:

  • Summer heat can easily push enclosure temps too high. Double-check thermometers and adjust lighting or heating elements accordingly.
  • Avoid placing tanks or terrariums near sunny windows—glass can amplify the heat quickly.
  • Maintain proper humidity (especially important for species like geckos, frogs, or chameleons).

Birds:

  • Birds can overheat in direct sunlight. Keep their cages out of hot windows and ensure plenty of airflow.
  • A shallow dish of water or misting with a spray bottle can help your bird cool down and stay entertained.
  • Be cautious with fans… direct drafts can cause respiratory stress in some species.

Small Mammals:

  • Rabbits, guinea pigs, and chinchillas are especially sensitive to heatstroke. Keep their environment cool, quiet, and shaded.
  • Frozen water bottles wrapped in a towel can act as a DIY cooling station.
  • Ensure proper ventilation in cages, especially in hutches kept outdoors.

No matter the species, watch for these signs of heat stress:

  • Panting or rapid breathing
  • Lethargy or unresponsiveness
  • Drooling or open-mouth breathing (especially in rabbits or reptiles)
